Townies answer Wednesday with a new song called Wednesday

Townies have released a new song called "Wednesday," answering the band Wednesday's own track "Townies," NME reported. The Boston-formed, Los Angeles-based emo band, made up of Tom Lynch, Chris Magnani and Nolan Melia, put out the single through Brain Synthesizer on August 12, with an accompanying video directed by Zach Miller.

Townies first promised the response track around the release of Wednesday's Bleeds album last September, on which "Townies" appears, writing at the time, "Wait til they hear Wednesday by Townies." NME described the resulting song as an angsty, pent-up emo track with chunky guitar riffs that builds to a fuzzy, frenetic payoff.

Wednesday's "Townies," written by frontwoman Karly Hartzman, was about a friend who faced sexual rumors and humiliation as a teenager; the song made NME's list of the best songs of 2025. Hartzman told NME last year the song came from being protective of a friend rather than herself: "You know how sometimes you're more defensive of your friend than yourself?" she said, describing it as a way of telling that friend she understood what they had been through.

Bleeds also earned a five-star review from NME, which singled out guitarist MJ Lenderman's playing on "Candy Breath" and "Townies" as turning Wednesday's "debilitating lows into explosive highs" into "something euphoric."

Hartzman has stayed active elsewhere this year too, joining Hayley Williams to perform "Mirtazapine" at the Newport Folk Festival and contributing to Weezer's recent single "Skinny Dipper," which will appear on their upcoming album The Gold Album.

The back-and-forth between the two acts adds a playful footnote to this year's indie scene, joining the rest of the week's new arrivals on the release calendar.
