Trypt lands on Circus Records with the four-track EP DUPPY

Trypt has released an EP called DUPPY on Circus Records, the label Flux Pavilion and Doctor P started and one of the few imprints that has been in dubstep long enough to have seen the genre change shape more than once. For a producer whose career began in the blog era, it is a sensible place to land.

His own account of what the record is for is straightforward. "DUPPY represents the different sides of dubstep that have always influenced me," he says, pointing at the swing, space and sub pressure of UK 140 on one side and the scale and intensity of the North American sound on the other, and saying he wanted the EP to move through all of it without falling apart.

The co-sign that started him off came in 2011, when Skrillex shared his remix of All I Ask of You. Bookings followed alongside Nero, Zeds Dead and Adventure Club, and a run of remixes that circulated well beyond his own release schedule. He has been a regular in EDM.com's Fresh Picks column in the years since.

DUPPY opens with GULLY MAN SZN, a collaboration with the South Wales MC Comma Dee, whose vocal sits over a claustrophobic 140 beat. The title track follows with skittering percussion and a low end that takes up most of the room. HIT THE SAFE goes furthest toward modern American dubstep, and the closer, LAST KISS, puts aching vocals over writhing bass and is the track EDM.com picks out.

No tour dates have been attached to the release, and Circus has not announced a follow-up. The EP is listed with the rest of the week's electronic releases on the release calendar.

Dubstep has had a busy year either side of this. Space Laces finally put Hazard Pay out after years of playing it live, and Kaskade and Wooli pushed further into the genre on Hear Me Now. DUPPY belongs to the same conversation, from a producer who was there for the first round of it.
