Vince Gill has released "Eighteen Summers," the ninth EP in his year-long "50 Years From Home" series, MusicRow reported on August 4. The upbeat, Cajun-flavored title track opens the seven-song set as a duet with co-writer Cyndi Thomson, a fellow country singer who had hits in the early 2000s.
Gill wrote "I'm All the Mississippi You'll Ever Need" with Belle Frantz, crediting Steve Earle with inspiring the title after Earle used to introduce his bass player, Dennis Crouch, as "all the Arkansas you'll ever need." The two-stepping "I'll Haunt Your Memory" marks Gill's first co-write with Carter Faith, while he wrote the mellow "Gone Like Yesterday" alone.
"Dancing in Texas," written with Catie Offerman, brings a waltz-time change of mood, a tempo Gill said runs in his family: his mother taught him to waltz as a boy, and some of his best-known songs, including "When I Call Your Name" and "Pocket Full of Gold," were built in the same three-quarter time. "Last Night at Closing Time," co-written with Brad Warren, Brett Warren and Preston Cooper, closes the EP's new material with a pedal steel solo from Paul Franklin.
The EP also carries a previously released single, "What the Cowgirls Do," Gill's hit from 1994's "When Love Finds You." He has been releasing a new EP each month as part of the series, drawing on songs written mostly over the past few years since leaving Oklahoma to start his career.
The cover art carries a personal touch: a small guitar Gill says has followed him since childhood, though he has never traced where it first came from. He recalls a photo of himself as a toddler asleep on a couch "with my arm around that guitar." It's filed under our country coverage.
