What So Not released a six-track EP called I Saw a Trap DJ, its full title nodding to how the sound "changed his bio chemistry," returning to the trap and future bass sound he helped build in the 2010s after years spent moving away from it. He announced the project in May by wiping his social media and admitting he had been "running away from a sound I helped create."
The EP opens with "Candy Flipping," pairing Brisbane rapper NERVE, an artist EDM.com said was forged in Australia's grime circuit, with Ukrainian vocalist Alina Pash, who appears on three of its six tracks blending what she has described as shamanic tradition with hard electronics.
"Mona Lisa" reunites What So Not with fellow 2010s trap architect Mr. Carmack. What So Not said he kept reworking the track's central riff to make it "harder and stupider," embracing its own absurdity as the song came together.
"Wires and Webs" slows things down with Elohim over warm, wafting synths and relaxed vocals, before closer "Trash" kicks back into higher energy, and a Pash-led outro on "I Don't Wanna Leave Yet" closes the project on a quieter note.
Three advance singles, "Everest," "Mona Lisa" and "Candy Flipping," rolled out across the summer ahead of the full release, each sharpening the project's direction.
The EP is out now on streaming platforms, one of the week's new arrivals on the release calendar, in a busy week of electronic news that also included Prospa launching a new label with a SAPIAN debut single, published by EDM.com the same day.
