Wisin and Ivy Queen open La Universidad del Perreo with the track Hasta abajo

Wisin has opened La Universidad del Perreo with "Hasta abajo," a song built on the classic reggaeton beat the genre was made on, and he handed the first lesson to Ivy Queen.

Ivy Queen, known as La Caballota, is cast as the teacher. Wisin has been direct about why: she is the artist who opened the doors of reggaeton to women, and Rolling Stone en Espanol frames her verse as a masterclass in perreo rather than a guest spot.

A couple of days before release, Wisin posted a WhatsApp exchange in which he invited her onto the faculty of his new institution. In the voice note he tells her that there would be no Universidad del Perreo without the queen who opened those doors, and that without her it would make no sense.

Her reply, also recorded, thanked him for thinking of her for something she called their shared history. She said she carries scars, miles and written chapters from the work of clearing a path, and asked that if they were going to talk about perreo they do it properly, with flow, with street, with foundations and with respect for everyone who laid a brick.

The teaser campaign around the project turned out to be an album rather than a single. Alongside Ivy Queen it carries Trebol Clan, Franco el Gorila, Jowell, Randy, Don Chezina, Jory Boy and Kapo, all figures in the development of the genre, and it arrives on September 4. The record sits on the release calendar with the rest of the latin autumn, after the viral campaign that revealed it, and it lands in a year when reggaeton's authorship has been argued in court in the Bad Bunny copyright case.
