Zac Brown Band pulled their tour openers on stage in Charleston, South Carolina on Wednesday and went straight into the Allman Brothers Band catalogue. Brothers Osborne joined them during the first set at Credit One Stadium for a medley that ran One Way Out into Whipping Post.
The song has a specific place in Allman Brothers history. Their version of One Way Out was recorded at the final Fillmore East concert on 27 June 1971 and released the following year on Eat a Peach, after which it stayed in the band's live set for decades. Jambase describes One Way Out itself as an early 1960s blues song the Allmans popularised rather than wrote.
The two bands split the work carefully. T.J. Osborne and Zac Brown traded lead vocals on One Way Out while John Osborne, Zac Brown Band fiddler Jimmy De Martini and guitarist Coy Bowles traded solos, then the group moved into the closing sections of Whipping Post with Bowles taking the chorus.
The acoustic stretch later in the show produced the rarer moment. Mark Bryan of Hootie and the Blowfish, who like Zac Brown Band has South Carolina roots, came out for Only Wanna Be With You, and Jambase notes it was the first time Zac Brown Band had ever covered it. Bryan sang the first half before Brown took the rest.
Brown had already reached for another South Carolina song in the same acoustic section. He played James Taylor's Carolina In My Mind, which the band had not performed since 17 October 2019, making it a deeper cut for this audience than the Hootie song was.
The whole night reads as a Charleston set rather than a stop on a tour. Two covers tied to the state, a guest who grew up in it and a medley built out of southern rock is a setlist assembled for one room, and the full concert is available on the nugs on-demand replay.
Zac Brown Band have been building guest appearances into this run all summer, which we covered in the Grace Potter and Amos Lee night in Philadelphia and in their Dolly Parton duet at Forest Hills Stadium. The dates are tracked on the tour guide with the rest of the country run.
