Arca headlines the Rave3000 festival in Buenos Aires on 11 December

Arca headlines Rave3000, a festival landing at Club Ciudad in Buenos Aires on 11 December. The organisers are billing it as a twelve-hour event across several open-air stages, with a line-up drawn from hard techno, house, trance and pop rather than from one of those scenes alone.

Arca arrives in Argentina off the back of XXXXX, the album she released in July. It was her first since she closed out the five-part Kick series, and the five years in between were spent largely on other people's records: remixes for Addison Rae, Robyn and Hikaru Utada, and production work for Madonna.

XXXXX also continues a naming habit she started with &&&&& and @@@@@, a title made of five identical characters. It was conceived as a mixtape in that tradition and grew into a full album, which is a fairly Arca way for a project to arrive.

The rest of the bill is built around club DJs rather than touring acts. Lessss, a French DJ and producer who works in hard techno and schranz, is on it, along with Patrick Mason, a fixture of the current Berlin club scene, and Kessler, a DJ and producer from Buenos Aires.

The local names matter to what the festival is trying to be. MissLupe is one of the emerging artists in the new Argentine scene, Marttein is an Argentine singer and producer, and Little Boogie is a rising figure in the country's urban music. A festival with an international headliner and a locally weighted undercard is making a claim about the city, not just importing a bill.

The organisers describe Rave3000 as coming out of the meeting point between vanguard electronic music, the defiance of urban music and alternative culture, with nightlife as the subject rather than the setting. They also state a commitment to the LGBT+ community and to the parties and collectives that keep the alternative scene in Buenos Aires running.

Tickets are on sale through Livepass. Buyers can take six interest-free instalments with Banco Galicia or three through Mercado Pago on any card, which is a standard arrangement in Argentina and a practical part of how a ticket at this price gets sold there.
