Chase & Status closed Reading Festival on August 30 with a set built around other people's voices. The UK production duo were the last act on the main stage, now called The Grid, at Little John's Farm, following co-headliner Florence + The Machine, and brought out 12 guest vocalists over 20 songs.
The first half ran through them quickly. ArrDee came out for Liquor & Cigarettes, NADIAH for Count On Me, D Double E for Levels and Novelist for NRG, all of it played into a torrential downpour that did not thin the crowd.
IRAH sang over a mash-up of the duo's remixes of Britney Spears' Toxic and Shy FX and UK Apache's Original Nuttah, and returned later for Program. Flowdan appeared for Baddadan and Takura for No Problem, which covers most of the vocal lineage the pair have drawn on across two decades of records.
The back half leaned to the songs with choruses. Tom Grennan sang All Goes Wrong, Clementine Douglas took Mixed Emotions, Debbie sang Gone Too Far and Liam Bailey came out for Blind Faith. "Reading, make some fucking noise for yourselves," the duo told the crowd at the end, after thanking old and new fans alike.
The set opened on Rage, Selecta, Streetlife and Disgruntled and worked in Don't Be Scared, Disconnect, Backbone and Carnage between the guest spots. Four of those songs, Disgruntled, Levels, Gone Too Far and Carnage, come from the record they have next.
Generic Everything, their eighth studio album, arrives on October 9. MusicSuey covered the announcement and the Little Simz and Skrillex features on it earlier this year.
They have had a heavy festival summer. Earlier in August they joined Skrillex during his own Boomtown headline set for a surprise back to back, playing an unreleased track with Brazilian vocals that fans read as a sign of a collaboration to come, and in July they played Romania's Electric Castle.
