Dinosaur Jr., the noisy, melodic indie rock band that helped define the American underground in the late 1980s, is marking the release of their new album with a three-day takeover of New York City rather than a single release-night show. There Near, the band's first album in five years, arrives August 28 through Jagjaguwar.
Dubbed The One. For New York. and put on with Fender and Show Brain, the run opens August 27 at Lucinda's with Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog opening, continues August 28 at Skinny Dennis with Steve Gunn, and closes out August 29 with a free daytime set at Maria Hernandez Park in Bushwick alongside Thurston Moore Group and They Are Gutting a Body of Water, followed that night by a ticketed show at Baby's All Right with Mike Kinsella of American Football and a solo set from Snail Mail.
For There Near, guitarist and vocalist J Mascis dug out a 1970s Mesa Boogie Mark 1 amp, the same model he used on Dinosaur Jr.'s earliest records, in an effort to reconnect with the band's original sound. Mascis has also worked with Fender on a signature Jazzmaster guitar model, with the company specifying the instrument's pickups, hardware and finish under his direction.
The New York run doubles as a preview of a bigger road trip: Dinosaur Jr.'s fall headlining tour behind There Near kicks off October 9 in Las Vegas, part of a wave of fall album rollouts tracked on the release calendar. Tickets to the Lucinda's, Skinny Dennis and Maria Hernandez Park dates are free with RSVP, while the Baby's All Right show has limited paid tickets.
