Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood duet on the Lady Gaga song Shallow in Washington

Garth Brooks brought his wife Trisha Yearwood onstage at Capital One Arena in Washington on Saturday, and the song they picked was not one of theirs. JamBase reports that the pair sang Shallow, the 2018 duet from A Star Is Born originally recorded by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, on a night that fell on Yearwood's 62nd birthday.

They have a claim on it. Brooks and Yearwood cut their own studio version of Shallow in 2020, and it appeared on his album Fun, so the arena version was a revival of their own recording rather than a straight cover. Yearwood emerged from a riser to the loudest reaction of the night.

She then took the solo spotlight for two of her own. She's In Love With The Boy was her debut single in 1991 and went to number one on release, and How Do I Live came at the tail of the nineties, a song whose competing versions were a chart story in themselves.

The show was the second and final night of the Washington stop on the Blame It All On My Roots Tour, a run that has been one of the steadier sellers in an uneven year for country touring. Brooks added Chicago and Washington to the routing earlier as the tour expanded.

A birthday guest spot is a small thing, and it is also the mechanism by which an arena tour keeps two nights in the same city from being the same night twice. Brooks has been filling seats through a slow stretch for country ticket sales, and moments that only happen on one of two dates are part of why. The country hub carries the rest of the week.
