Gunna has a title for his next record and a rough idea of when it might land. The Atlanta rapper told Forbes' The Enterprise Zone that the album is called Splurge and that it could come out as early as October, less than a year after The Last Wun.
He framed it as a step up rather than a continuation. He wants to tap into what he called a new next level he has been working towards, and Splurge is the name for it: an upper-echelon artist who has gravitated somewhere else.
He was careful not to commit. "If I feel ready, it could come out next month," he said, adding that if he is not ready then he is not ready, and that he does not have a date.
The more interesting part of the conversation was about who releases it. The Last Wun was widely expected to close out his deal with Young Thug's YSL Records, which left open whether he would go independent or sign somewhere new. Gunna would not describe himself as a free agent. There is work going on, he said, and there have been a lot of talks about what is being produced and who is going to be behind him supporting it.
He has kept himself in circulation in the meantime with features on Shaboozey's High Noon and Rich The Kid's Too Bad. The Last Wun debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. Splurge is on the release calendar as an October possibility rather than a date, filed under hip-hop, and the label it lands on may be the bigger story when it does. YSL itself has kept moving, releasing Slime Language 3 earlier this year.
