Johnny Marr says Noel Gallagher is writing songs again, without saying what they are for. Speaking to Absolute Radio, Marr was asked whether he had seen his friend and collaborator recently, and said Gallagher is writing songs for fun, recording them and enjoying himself.
Marr filled in the rest with the texture of a long friendship rather than any detail about the music. He said he sees Gallagher all the time, that he is the same as always, and that their exchanges tend to be WhatsApp messages about Manchester United and effects pedals, which he said has been the shape of the relationship for 30 odd years.
The comments line up with what Gallagher himself said in February, when he told talkSPORT that he was in the studio. Before that he had said he was back at work after a Christmas break, and in spring 2025 Stereophonics singer Kelly Jones said Gallagher had been doing some writing without knowing what it was for.
What remains unresolved is the destination. It could be a new Oasis project, which would be the band's first new music since 2008's Dig Out Your Soul, a follow up to the last Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds album, or neither. Marr did not say, and neither has Gallagher.
That last High Flying Birds record was 2023's Council Skies, which featured Marr on three songs: Pretty Boy, Open The Door, See What You Find and I'm Not Giving Up Tonight. So the two have a working relationship as well as a personal one.
Speculation has run hot since the 2024 reunion announcement and the Live 25 tour, not least because Liam Gallagher said an album was already finished, then admitted in November that he had been trolling fans. This site has covered the same period through the Oasis documentary trailer, in which Noel Gallagher asks whether the band will fall apart again, and unseen footage from the band's 1994 Glasgow gig going public. Any rock release would land on the release calendar.
