Chris Lake, Chris Lorenzo and Kenny Beats have released "Long Jacket," a tech house rebuild of CAKE's 2001 alt-rock song "Short Skirt / Long Jacket." The original became a radio staple after the turn of the century and later served as the theme for the comedy series Chuck; this version turns it into a bouncy dancefloor record.
It has been in circulation for almost a year without a name. The track appeared in Lorenzo's EDC Las Vegas set and across Lake's three-night New York run earlier this summer, and the pair also played it as Anti Up, their joint alias, at Portola last year. That made it one of the most chased unidentified IDs in either producer's sets.
Kenny Beats is the surprise on the credit line. He started in the early 2010s as half of the trap duo LOUDPVCK before moving into hip-hop and building a run of production credits for Denzel Curry, Vince Staples and Gucci Mane, then crossing into rock and alternative with Weezer, Geese and Toro y Moi. That range makes a dance record built from an alt-rock sample a reasonable fit rather than a novelty.
Both house producers are in a prolific stretch. Lake has released "Party Time" with Tiga, "Make You Fight" with ATRIP and an official remix of Taylor Swift's "Opalite" this year, plus two tracks on Skrillex's SOMA album. Lorenzo put out "In This Bih" with Kah-Lo and "Invisible" with Jazzy, two of the most played house records of the year.
The single is filed under electronic, and its date sits on the release calendar. Lake spent the summer on festival bills alongside Kaskade, including the Breakaway series' first Salt Lake City edition, and Kenny Beats had already returned with Denzel Curry on the single Difference featuring Yebba earlier in the month.
