Kenny Chesney says three years of time went into the album Silver Sands Marina

Kenny Chesney has spent about three years on Silver Sands Marina, and he is clear that this was the point rather than a delay. "I was afforded the gift of time for this one," he told the TODAY Show, describing a process he was not rushed through.

He was specific about why. A successful record normally brings pressure for another inside twelve to eighteen months, and he says he was off that treadmill because he spent two years at the Sphere and wrote a book in the meantime. The eleven-track album took as long as it took.

What he says holds the record together is joy. He described a set of emotions meant to make a listener feel alive, and traced the instinct back to watching faces in a crowd every night, admitting he edits himself to a fault by asking whether anyone out there will care about a song before he records it.

The album follows Born, released in 2024, and is led by Carry On, which has been climbing the country radio charts. Chesney performed Goldfish and Carry On at Rockefeller Plaza during the TODAY appearance, the first time either had been played live.

He is marking the release with a single show rather than a run of dates. Chesney plays The Pinnacle in Nashville on 25 September, one night only, and said the plan is to play five, six or maybe seven of the eleven songs if the band can get them together.

The framing he used for the whole project was albums as objects rather than as collections of singles. The time, he said, took him back to when albums mattered and the songs spoke to each other, which is a fair description of what an eleven-track record sequenced over three years is for.
