Mt. Joy filled their Madison Square Garden set with guests on Wednesday night, bringing out Gigi Perez, SNACKTIME and Caamp's Taylor Meier at separate points. The Philadelphia-formed band were back in the New York arena, and the song choices spelled out how each of those relationships works.
Perez came out for a song she helped write. "A couple of years ago I had the chance to meet a North Jersey native who is unbelievably talented," frontman Matt Quinn told the crowd, before the pair led the band through In the Middle, from Mt. Joy's 2025 album Hope We Have Fun. She had performed it with them once before, at Governors Ball in 2025.
She came back later for Silver Lining, this time alongside SNACKTIME, who are from Philadelphia as well. That band's own contributions were Pink Lady and Lucy, plus a medley that started with Julia and worked through the Flaming Lips' Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and Gnarls Barkley's Crazy.
Taylor Meier's appearance was the simplest of the three. The Caamp frontman joined Mt. Joy for a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's Have You Ever Seen the Rain, and Jambase notes the two Ohio and Philadelphia bands have shared stages repeatedly before this. Meier returned at the end of the main set for Silver Lining as well.
Even without guests the set leaned heavily on other people's songs. Mt. Joy also played Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Mary Jane's Last Dance, Frank Ocean's Pink + White, Harry Styles' As It Was and the Grateful Dead's Fire on the Mountain, a spread that runs from 1993 to 2022 and from rock radio to modern pop.
The main set closed on Silver Lining before a two-song encore of Bathroom Light and Astrovan. The whole concert is available as a livestream replay to nugs subscribers.
A guest-heavy arena show built almost entirely on covers and co-writes is a particular kind of statement about where a band sits. Madison Square Garden has seen a run of these lately, including Kacey Musgraves bringing out Troye Sivan and Mumford and Sons bringing out Jason Sudeikis.
