Phoebe Bridgers hid a collaboration with former Black Country, New Road vocalist Isaac Wood inside her new album Lost Weekend, tucking the track "Best Dressed" into the CD's pre-gap before opener "The Outside." Fans can reach it by rewinding roughly four minutes from the first track on CD, and it also closes out the vinyl edition as the 17th and final song.
Wood takes his own verse on the song, singing lines including, "You saved me from dancing with Mr. Polanski, bidding farewell to my family with a smile." Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst, who appears elsewhere on Lost Weekend and previously played alongside Bridgers in Better Oblivion Community Center, is also credited on the track, along with Jack Antonoff and Jon Brion.
Wood left Black Country, New Road in January 2022, days before the release of their second album, Ants From Up Here, citing struggles with his mental health. His appearance on "Best Dressed" comes ahead of him supporting Bridgers on the UK and European leg of her Lost Weekend tour, after her North American dates next month; he'll join her for shows in Dublin, Manchester and London, and Bridgers is also playing a run of intimate, phone-free shows in the UK next week.
Lost Weekend is Bridgers' first album since 2020's Punisher and carries a long list of collaborators beyond Wood and Oberst, including her partner Bo Burnham and her Boygenius bandmates Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker. Its credits also list a mysterious "Son-John Johnson" as a vocalist on two other tracks, a name some fans believe is a pseudonym for Geese's Cameron Winter.
Lost Weekend itself arrived on August 14, and Bridgers is also lined up to preview the record inside more than 40 planetariums later this year. The hidden track joins the rest of this week's indie news on the release calendar.
