Rose has released a solo single called new trick. It is the first new music of her own since APT, the 2024 collaboration with Bruno Mars that turned into a global hit and remains by a wide margin the biggest solo song to come out of Blackpink.
That gap between APT and everything else is the context for how this is being covered. Stereogum was direct about it, saying it has no intention of flagging every solo release by a Blackpink member and will make an exception when one of them makes something worth hearing.
Rose is the New Zealand-born member of the group, and her solo work has consistently sat further from K-pop production than the group's records do. APT was a straight pop-rock single built on a chant, and it worked in markets that had never played a Blackpink song.
The question with new trick is whether that reach repeats. A solo single from a member of a group that size arrives with a guaranteed streaming floor, and the interesting part is only ever what happens above it.
