John Fogerty and Steve Winwood have been touring together since 3 September without sharing a stage. That ended in Charlotte on 16 September, when Fogerty called Winwood back out four songs into his headline set at Truliant Amphitheater for a version of Wilson Pickett's In The Midnight Hour.
The timing was pointed. It was show number ten of the Legacy Tour, and the first time the two Rock and Roll Hall of Famers had played together on it. Winwood emerged after an opening run of Bad Moon Rising, Up Around The Bend and Green River, and the pair traded verses while Winwood added guitar to the soul standard.
Pickett co-wrote In The Midnight Hour with Steve Cropper and released it in 1965, and it is not a song Fogerty has leaned on. JamBase, citing Setlist.FM, calls the Charlotte version only his third documented performance of it, after an appearance at the 1989 Bay Area Music Awards and a night at the Encore Theater in Las Vegas on 3 March 2017.
That count sits awkwardly with the rest of the same paragraph. JamBase also notes that Fogerty sang the song with Sam Moore at the 1995 Concert for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and again at the institution's second induction ceremony in 1987 alongside B.B. King and Keith Richards. Two of those are ceremonies rather than concerts, which is the likeliest reason a setlist database does not count them, but the article does not say so and the arithmetic is left visible in the source.
Winwood's own opening set ran to ten songs, bookended by Glad and Gimme Some Lovin', with Can't Find My Way Home, Dear Mr. Fantasy, Higher Love and Back In The High Life Again among the rest. Fogerty's headline set stayed largely in Creedence territory, running from Bad Moon Rising through Fortunate Son to an encore of Travelin' Band and Proud Mary.
Three joint dates remain, starting on the Friday after the Charlotte show in St. Augustine, Florida, which gives the pairing a small window to repeat the trick. Veteran acts trading guest spots has been a running feature of the season in rock: Guns N' Roses and Chris Stapleton joined each other's sets in Canada, and Tedeschi Trucks Band brought out Lukas Nelson and Alam Khan in Berkeley.
