Singer Taylor Swift gives $50,000 to a mother hurt helping at a crash site

Taylor Swift has donated $50,000 to a fundraiser for Ashley Taunton, an American mother of three who was badly hurt while helping strangers at the roadside. The money went to a GoFundMe set up to cover daily expenses for Taunton, her husband and their children so the family could concentrate on her recovery.

The circumstances are what carried the story. According to the fundraising page, Taunton saw people in trouble after a car accident and pulled over in heavy rain to help. Her husband Joe described it as Ashley doing Ashley things. While she was assisting, another vehicle hydroplaned toward the scene, and Taunton pushed someone out of its path before being struck herself.

Her recovery is not a short one. The page says she has already undergone two major surgeries with more scheduled, and describes a very long and difficult road ahead. That is the kind of detail that turns a fundraiser from an emergency appeal into a long-term one.

Swift's donation was noticed because she left a note with it rather than giving quietly. "Wishing you the best recovery possible and sending love to your family!" she wrote in the comment section, and fans found it. Taunton has since responded publicly, saying she was sobbing with gratitude and that she was speechless.

The sum sits inside a much larger pattern. Ahead of her marriage to Travis Kelce earlier this year, Swift and Kelce gave $26 million across 20 charities in the United States, chosen for their connections to the two of them. That list included the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, The Store in Nashville, Helping Harvest in Swift's hometown of Reading, Pennsylvania, Children's Mercy Hospital and Harvesters in Kansas City, After-School All-Stars in Kelce's hometown of Cleveland, and national bodies including Feeding America, the ASPCA, Grammy In The Schools and Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.

That last entry has taken on a different weight in the past fortnight, since Dolly Parton's death at 80 put her literacy charity at the centre of a run of tributes and donations.

Swift's own year has been busy in less charitable directions. She pulled her music from Trump campaign videos, and saw a copyright lawsuit dismissed while the Eras Tour film picked up Emmy nominations. A $50,000 donation to one family is a smaller item than any of those, and it is the one that travelled furthest this week among her pop audience.
