Turnstile play their first live cover of The Stone Roses on the Piece Hall stage

Turnstile have finally taken their Stone Roses cover to a stage. "I Wanna Be Adored" arrived live for the first time on August 26, during a headline show at The Piece Hall in Halifax.

The band had recorded a version of the song in March for Triple J's Like A Version series, but had never carried it into a set. It arrived roughly two thirds of the way through a 21-song night, between "SOLE" and "LOOK OUT FOR ME", and the live arrangement kept the dreamier feel of the recorded version rather than pushing it towards hardcore.

Guitarist Meg Mills had explained the choice at the time of the recording, tying it to the death of the Roses' bassist Mani. As a Brit, she said, the band were one every kid with any leaning towards alternative music knew from an early age, and she called them the coolest of the Manchester bands of that era. Frontman Brendan Yates was blunter, calling it one of his favourite songs of all time.

The Halifax show also carried a second tribute. Turnstile walked on to "Islands In The Stream", the Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton duet, a day after Parton's death was announced. The set otherwise leaned on Never Enough, opening with "BIRDS" and closing on "T.L.C. (TURNSTILE LOVE CONNECTION)".

The Piece Hall date is part of a UK run that continues at All Points East on August 28 and 29, where the band support Tyler, The Creator on a bill that also includes Clipse, Vince Staples, Danny Brown and Ghostface Killah.

The rock band have kept expanding Never Enough rather than moving past it, most recently recruiting Elton John, Slayyyter and others for a remake project. Their remaining dates are tracked on the tour guide.
