Twickenham Jazz Club booked 12 Wednesday nights from September to January

Twickenham Jazz Club has set out twelve Wednesday nights between 23 September 2026 and 13 January 2027, its full autumn and winter run at The Cabbage Patch on London Road, a short walk from Twickenham station. Lesley Christiane, who has promoted the club since 2003, published the list herself through UK Jazz News on 24 August. It is a volunteer operation in a pub function room, and the schedule is the whole story.

The house rules are firmer than most rooms of this size bother with. No talking during the music and no phones held up to film it, a policy Christiane enforces rather than suggests. Her argument is that the audience is the product as much as the band: she creates the ambiance, and people who genuinely want to listen turn up. The club's own website describes it as a place "where musicians love to play and our audience loves to listen, creating a symbiotic relationship of extraordinary musical magic." Asked by a newcomer whether they check who is playing before buying a ticket, one regular said they did not, because they trust Lesley.

September opens on the 23rd with SoulTime, billed as classic swinging soul jazz, played by Steve Fishwick on trumpet, Leon Greening at the piano, Matayas Hofecker on double bass and Matt Home on drums. A week later the guitarist Harry Diplock brings a string-leaning quartet: Sol Grimshaw on second guitar, Matt Holborn on violin and Lorenzo Morabito on double bass.

October carries three dates. The Neil Angilley Trio play on the 7th, with Angilley singing from the piano while Davide Giovannini and Davide Mantovani both double on vocals. The saxophonist Alan Barnes is in on the 14th with Liam Dunachie, Rob Rickenberg and Steve Rushton. The 28th goes to the Nicolas Meier Quartet, with Demi Garcia Sabat on percussion, Richard Jones on violin and Tom Mason on acoustic bass.

November is the busiest month on paper. Dominic Howles marks a birthday on the 4th with a sextet built from Sammy Mayne on alto, Josephine Davies on tenor, Mick Foster on baritone and Steve Fishwick back on trumpet, plus Sean Fyfe on keyboards and Matt Fishwick on drums. On the 11th Karl Charity sings and plays trumpet and flugelhorn through a Chet Baker programme with Carl Greenwood, Gareth Davies and Michael Osborne. The 25th pairs two pianists who both sing, Hugo Jennings and Pete Malinverni, under the title New York Meets London.

December is short. Giorgio Serci plays film music on the 2nd with Davide Mantovani on double bass and Daniele Antenucci on drums, and Alex Garnett brings a set called Warm up to Christmas on the 9th, with Leon Greening on keys, Sandy Burnett on double bass and Alfonzo Vitale on drums. The room comes back on 6 January with Pete Long's Ellington and More, and finishes the run on the 13th with Nat Steele and Jim Mullen, backed by Sean Fyfe, Lorenzo Morabito and Mark Taylor.

Christiane's case is that rooms like hers are what keeps the scene fed, and she is not the only person making it. Grassroots jazz promotion has been a running story in Britain this year: small venues, promoters and artists have been applying to the Liveline fund, and the guitarist Nigel Price built a 20-date grassroots tour out of exactly this circuit of clubs and back rooms.

The louder end of London jazz is moving in the same months. Blue Note opens its first UK club on 23 September, the same night Twickenham starts its season, and the Spitz returned to Old Spitalfields Market for a thirtieth-anniversary pair of shows. Twickenham is not chasing any of that. It is a pub back room on a Wednesday with a no-talking rule, twelve nights booked, and the same promoter who booked the first one.
