Alex G has written the score for Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, a new slasher from director Jane Schoenbrun that won the Queer Palm at Cannes. Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson head the cast, with Einbinder playing a young director trying to resurrect a fading slasher franchise who visits its reclusive original star, played by Anderson, and is pulled into a surreal, blood-soaked world stalked by a spear-wielding villain called Little Death.

The first music to surface from the soundtrack is "Pain Is the Heart of Love," a song Alex G made with Paul Buchanan of the Blue Nile, layering acoustic guitar and orchestral flourishes under Buchanan's gravelly vocals. Schoenbrun wrote the lyrics themselves, which explore what The Fader described as the blurry space between acrimony and connection.

The film marks the third collaboration between Alex G and Schoenbrun, following 2022's We're All Going to the World's Fair and 2024's I Saw the TV Glow. Waxwork Records will release the film's soundtrack digitally and physically on August 21, pairing selections from Alex G's score with tracks by R.E.M., Sally Shapiro, Donna Lewis, Counting Crows and Okay Kaya; the label follows with Alex G's complete score on September 11.

Alex G's film work has run alongside a busy year in his own music too. He's a credited contributor to Phoebe Bridgers's just-released album Lost Weekend, and he's set to open some dates on her fall North American arena tour. A second report on the same soundtrack news is also on file.

For listeners who have followed his solo albums, the crossover into film scoring is not a surprise; moving between his own songwriting and soundtrack work has become a regular part of his output, and "Pain Is the Heart of Love" is the latest sign of it, tracked as part of this week's indie and rock coverage.
