Carly Pearce brought the Honest Woman: Up Close Tour to Joe's on Weed St. in Chicago on 17 September and played for close to two hours. The format is the point: a club rather than a shed, 20 songs, and long stretches of talking between them.
She opened with three from her just-released fifth album, Honest Woman, playing Leave My Heart Alone, How Long and She Don't, then reached back for Never Wanted To Be That Girl, Should've Known Better and Every Little Thing. "This is one of my absolute favorite places in the world to play," she told the room early on.
The most personal stretch came around Why God Why Me. Pearce told the audience her mother, who has been dealing with health problems, was in the room, and said the family believes she received a miracle in her healing over the past year. She has described that as the thing that carried her through making the record.
A middle run turned sharper. Truck on Fire, WWJD and Same Circus work through the messier side of relationships, and she brought her opener Belle Frantz back out for You Can Have Him.
Two songs in the set were chosen by the audience before the show. The vote landed on We Don't Fight Anymore, her collaboration with Chris Stapleton, and 29, which is five years old this year. "I wrote this song in the saddest place of my life," she said of the latter, telling anyone going through something hard not to be afraid to leave what their gut says is wrong.
When fans held up signs for songs that had not made the setlist, she sang a few lines of each rather than ignoring them, calling the segment Carly-oke. She also invited fans to nominate someone worth celebrating, tied to the song Happy for Myself, and chose a woman named Ally who lost her father to ALS at 13 and now works as a social worker.
