Los Angeles band Dummy have signed to Polyvinyl and announced their next album, do you love the color, then of the sky?, The Line of Best Fit and Pitchfork both reported on August 13. The record follows 2024's Free Energy and its remix collection Bubbelibrium DLC, and the band calls it their "anti-zeitgeist" album, trading Free Energy's Madchester and rave-culture spirit for post-rock and drone, with pop touches drawn from early Bjork, The Sundays and Madonna's Ray of Light.
Lead single "Full Spectrum Dominance" comments on AI and the devaluation of art. Guitarist Joe Trainor calls it the band's unofficial nu metal song, joking they added a tambourine during recording for a "Deee-Lite meets Deftones" feel, while keyboardist Emma frames its target more directly: tech billionaires treating AI "like the new Alchemy," built on other people's work.
The accompanying video, directed by Matt Wells, mixes 3D animation with found imagery exploring AI as a modern form of alchemy. The full ten-track album also includes "April Limousine," "Alluvial Fan," "Squeaky Wheel," "Touch the Perfect Speed," "Song of Mana," "Omen Globe," "C.B.B.S.I.M.M.P.W.M.," "N of 1" and "Heaven's What You Make of It."
Pitchfork describes the wider album as moving through dream pop, breakbeat and trip-hop, taking on the climate crisis, AI and surveillance. Since Free Energy, Dummy have toured extensively, playing around 113 shows including two trips to Europe. Drummer Alex Ewell said touring "has had a huge impact on us and our music," and the band heads out again this autumn for a US run beginning October 13 in Fresno, working through Reno, Portland, Vancouver, Seattle, Boise, Salt Lake City and Denver before a hometown stop in Los Angeles on November 4.
do you love the color, then of the sky? is due October 16 via Polyvinyl and sits within indie and electronic, and in the release calendar alongside the rest of the fall's new albums.
