Dummy have released two songs at once, April Limousine and Alluvial Fan, sharing a single video directed by Emma Maatman of the band. Both come from do you love the color of the sky?, the Los Angeles five-piece's second album, which Polyvinyl puts out on 16 October. The group is Alex Ewell, Maatman, Nathan O'Dell, Joe Trainor and Lance Umble.
April Limousine is the album's front door rather than just its first track. Maatman says it quotes every other song on the record, including demos that never made the final sequence, and leaves the listener holding the question the title asks. The video sets the beauty of the landscape against the machinery closing in on it, and hands off to the second song when O'Dell is pulled toward the wires around him.
O'Dell describes Alluvial Fan as a hybrid of two ideas. One is imagery borrowed from a 2000s anime in which total digital connection dissolves the line between reality and the self. The other is the geological feature the song is named after, the fan of sediment a stream drops when it leaves a narrow valley. Allyson and Paul from New Issue sing on the track.
The pair follow Full Spectrum Dominance, the album's first single, which also arrived with a video. do you love the color of the sky? is the follow-up to Free Energy from 2024, and the press materials point at Seefeel, Windy and Carl, Laika, Disco Inferno, early Bjork, The Sundays and Madonna's Ray of Light as the places the record is coming from.
Dummy signed to Polyvinyl earlier in the cycle and have been rolling the album out since, with the full track details published in August. It is the kind of indie release that lives or dies on a West Coast club run, and they have one.
The tour starts on 13 October at the Tower Lounge in Fresno and works north through San Francisco, Sacramento, Reno, Arcata, Portland, Vancouver, Seattle, Boise, Salt Lake City and Denver, with Golomb on most of the dates. It ends on 4 November at Sid The Cat Ballroom in Los Angeles. Dates and release week are both tracked on the release calendar, and the record itself sits on the noisier end of rock.
