Fontaines D.C. will headline Slane Castle on June 26, 2027, which puts them in company almost no Irish band reaches. Only U2 and Thin Lizzy have topped the bill at the County Meath site before them, and the wider list of headliners includes Oasis, Madonna, David Bowie and The Rolling Stones.
The announcement came at the end of a weekend that had already gone well for them. The band headlined both Reading and Leeds, then closed Electric Picnic in Stradbally on the Sunday night, three consecutive festival headline slots across two countries.
Irish fans had been told a special announcement was coming when a full UK and European tour was confirmed the week before, and this is what it was. Tickets go on general sale at 10am BST on Thursday September 3, with a pre-sale from 10am BST on Tuesday September 1.
The show sits well ahead of the album cycle it will close. Dopamine Chamber, their fifth record, arrives on October 16, and MusicSuey covered the announcement and the first single Marianne when they landed. By next June the record will have had eight months to work through.
They have been road-testing material already. During the Leeds set they gave a first airing to a new song called Happy For You, which they described as yearning, and Electric Picnic got its own version of the same run.
The scale of the booking is what makes it notable rather than the date. Slane runs to a capacity most Irish acts never approach, and the guest list of past headliners is why being the third Irish act to top it is worth stating plainly.
