Johnny Marr is releasing a new album, The Age of Everything, on October 2 via BMG, and has shared its latest single, "It's Time," through a music video built from live footage shot at Castlefield Bowl on July 9.
"'It's Time' is my way of singing about some worldly issues but finding defiance, in idealism," Marr said of the song, describing lyrics meant to match the music's exuberance while resisting cynicism and corruption. He put it more bluntly elsewhere, saying the song is ultimately about people with "dodgy views."
Marr wrote The Age of Everything in London and recorded it in Manchester, calling it the most cathartic record he's made. He said the title arrived early in the process and stuck, capturing what he sees as a widely shared feeling of technological overwhelm that still leaves room for possibility rather than only dread.
"It's Time" follows the album's first single, "Spin," and its follow-up, "Ophelia," both also released with their own videos, continuing a steady lead-up to the October release.
Marr, famously a former guitarist for the Smiths, follows 2022's Fever Dreams Pts 1-4, an album first released piecemeal as a series of EPs before being compiled into a full record.
The Age of Everything adds to a run of new rock and indie albums tracked on the release calendar this fall.
