Olivia Rodrigo closed the first edition of Daisy Chain Fields on August 29 with three guests, each a generation older than her and each carrying a song she has been circling for years. The one-day festival was her idea, staged at Great Park in Irvine, California, and she topped the bill on the Dandelion Stage.
Sarah McLachlan came out first. Rodrigo told the crowd that without Lilith Fair, the women-led touring festival McLachlan founded in 1997, there would be no Daisy Chain. They played Building A Mystery and Angel together and dedicated both to Dolly Parton, who had died four days earlier at 80 after a brief illness.
Alanis Morissette joined later for Ironic, her 1996 single, before Stevie Nicks arrived to end the night with Landslide, the Fleetwood Mac song from 1975. Rodrigo had trailed that one herself: asked shortly after the line-up was announced which song she hoped to sing, she said Landslide, maybe, and crossed her fingers.
She also gave Serena Joy its first live performance. The song, written out of The Handmaid's Tale, reached streaming services this week after an initial run of 500 CDs sold only at a record store near the site. The rest of the set drew on her three albums, with Drivers License, Good 4 U, Deja Vu and Bad Idea Right? all in the running order.
The bill around her was built the same way as the headline slot. Chappell Roan, Doechii, Mitski, Bikini Kill, The Breeders, Garbage, Santigold, Rachel Chinouriri and Die Spitz all played. Devon Again was added late after KATSEYE withdrew, when Megan Skiendiel sprained an ankle rehearsing for the group's own tour.
Every artist on the bill waived their fee, and the festival's net proceeds go to non-profits working with women and girls. The site also carried educational resources and installations on reproductive rights, maternal health, economic empowerment, domestic violence prevention and gender equality, and organisers had already set the stage times so no two sets clashed.
Rodrigo released her third album, You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love, in June, and starts the Unraveled world tour next month with Wolf Alice, The Last Dinner Party, Devon Again, Grace Ives and Die Spitz supporting across the run. It reaches The O2 in London in May 2027, and the year's other pop touring plans are collected in the tour guide.
