Singer Phoebe Bridgers got appendicitis on her 32nd birthday

Phoebe Bridgers has been diagnosed with appendicitis. The singer, who turned 32 on August 17, shared the news on Instagram Stories on Wednesday with a photo of herself in a hospital bed with an IV in her arm. "I got appendicitis for my birthday," she wrote.

She had spent the birthday itself onstage, playing two shows at London's Union Chapel to mark her new album. The diagnosis followed within days, and she told ticket holders "I'll make it up to you."

Bridgers gave no further detail about her condition or her treatment. Rolling Stone noted that appendicitis is treated as a medical emergency and happens when the organ becomes sore or inflamed, and that Johns Hopkins describes it as the most common cause of sudden stomach pain, usually fixed with surgery and a few days of recovery.

The illness landed in the middle of the busiest stretch of her year. Lost Weekend, her third album, came out on August 14, her first solo record in six years, and Rolling Stone's Angie Martoccio gave it four and a half stars, calling it her longest and most daring record yet.

Her remaining UK shows this week, in Kingston, Brighton and Bristol, will be rescheduled, and no new dates have been announced. Banquet Records, which was to host the Kingston shows, said it was working with her team. Alfie Templeman is another indie act who has postponed shows this year on health grounds.

The calendar ahead of her is long. The Lost Tour, an arena run behind the album, begins in Indianapolis in mid-September and continues through December 12 in Stockholm.
