Radio Free Alice announce a debut album and talk up supporting Geese

Radio Free Alice have announced their debut album, What's In Between, and released the single "Crying With You" to go with it.

The Melbourne band's first full-length is due on October 30 through Atlantic Records. It follows "Kick In The Shins", a single about isolation and confusion, and continues their work with producers Ewan Pearson and Peter Katis. Milo Hume directed the video for the new song.

Frontman Noah Learmonth explained that "Crying With You" came out of a writing retreat in Joshua Tree, at a property owned by producer Nicolas Vernhes, and that its verse and chorus began life as two different songs before the band joined them. He called the announcement a relief, saying the songs had been part of their lives for a long time.

Speaking to NME backstage at Reading after an early afternoon set on The Gallery stage, the band described the album as a coming of age record. Learmonth, drummer Lochie Dowd and guitarist Jules Paradiso also talked about the weight of playing a festival with that history, with the frontman noting that Reading and Glastonbury are the two every Australian band grows up aware of.

The year started with the band supporting Geese in Australia, which Learmonth described as being thrown in at the deep end. He called sharing a stage with Cameron Winter strange and topical, and told a story about Winter bringing a ten-year-old piano prodigy on as his support act at a Melbourne solo show because local rules required one.

Dowd was more deadpan about the attention the band are now getting, saying it feels as though all of their eyes and ears are contained in the van they travel in. The indie and rock album goes on the release calendar for October, and Winter's own year has included a Carnegie Hall concert film heading to theatres.
