Cameron Winter is sending the film made around his Carnegie Hall concert to Canada, with three cities booked between December and January. The Geese singer's concert album, Live at Carnegie Hall, arrives on 9 October, and the film follows it into cinemas rather than onto a streaming service.
The director is Paul Thomas Anderson, which is the detail that separates this from an ordinary concert release. Exclaim describes a 35 mm print rather than a digital file, so the Canadian dates are tied to rooms that can actually run one.
Toronto gets it first, at TIFF Bell Lightbox on 2 and 3 December. Vancouver's Cinematheque has it across four days, 11 to 14 December, and Montreal's Cinematheque Quebecoise closes the Canadian run on 12 and 13 January. Tickets for Vancouver and Montreal are already on sale through the film's own site; Toronto's had not been released when Exclaim published.
The wider schedule is long enough that the Canadian dates are a small part of it. Screenings run from 20 November, starting in Santa Monica, Brooklyn and New York, and carry on through Chicago's Music Box Theatre, Atlanta's Plaza Theatre, Nashville's Belcourt, Denver's Sie FilmCenter and a batch of Alamo Drafthouse rooms at the end of January.
The pattern of venues says something about how the film is being handled. These are repertory and arthouse cinemas, not multiplexes, which fits a 35 mm print and fits an artist whose audience will travel for a single screening. It is closer to how a restored feature gets reissued than how a music documentary usually goes out.
All of this is happening while Geese are on the road, so Winter's solo work and his band's touring are running at the same time rather than in sequence.
