Rochelle Jordan has released a Chad Hugo remix of Never Enough, the first thing heard from Disc 2 of her Through The Wall remix series. The EP arrives on Thursday, Sept. 10.
Hugo's approach is additive rather than corrective. The track's twirling percussive bass and chords stay where they were, and he builds a fat, squelchy electro-bass on top of them, adds space-age background sounds and cuts the tempo switch that closed the original. The result reads as a new angle on a song that was already one of the album's strongest cuts.
Disc 2 follows the shape of the first instalment: four remixes of songs from Through The Wall, mixing established names with newer producers. Terry Hunter, Bianca Oblivion and Shanti Celeste supply the other three, which puts a Chicago house veteran and a pair of club producers alongside a Neptunes founder on the same short release.
Jordan has had a run of recognition to go with it, including becoming a collaborator with Mariah Carey on a remix of Didn't Mean To Turn You On. The remix series is her own project rather than a label exercise, and it keeps her catalogue circulating between albums.
Three more EPs follow after this one, scheduled for October, November and December, which turns Through The Wall into a rolling release rather than a single record with a long tail.
For a singer working the seam between rnb-soul and electronic music, handing the same songs to house, club and pop producers in sequence is a way of showing how far the material stretches.
