The Avalanches have revealed the full 31-track lineup for No Bad Memories, their fourth studio album, out October 16. The guest list is as long as the tracklist, running from Jamie xx and Panda Bear to Rivers Cuomo, Mike Patton, Haruomi Hosono, Ryoji Ikeda, Vegyn, Portraits of Tracy and the actor Haley Joel Osment.
Three songs are already out. "Together" features Nikki Nair, Jessy Lanza and Prentiss; "Every Single Weekend" pairs the Australian group with Jamie xx; and "Blue Shadows" is their second collaboration with Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Karen O, after "Dial D for Devotion" from 2020's We Will Always Love You.
The record has a subject, which is unusual for a group better known for texture. The Avalanches say it was inspired by the ways advertising and branded technology embed themselves in memory, and they call those ways both magical and insidious. Commercial jingles, startup sounds and forgotten audio logos become the raw material, and the result is described as an ambivalent ode to nostalgia.
The collaborators back that up. The glitch composer Ikeda appears on three tracks, including "Xerox Altalink B8055" and "Unicorn Quest", while Yellow Magic Orchestra founder Hosono closes the album on "The Pavements Light". Suzanne Ciani, whose pioneering electronic work helped build the sound language of advertising itself, joins Barry Can't Swim on "Our Love Is Alive", and the Tunisian footwork artist Khadija Al Hanafi guests on four more.
Pop and rock lineage runs through the rest. Weezer's Cuomo appears with Vegyn and Baby Marlboro on "All The Time in the World", Animal Collective's Panda Bear contributes to "Highfield", Faith No More's Patton turns up on three songs, and Carly Simon sings on "One More Fantasy". Osment gets the assignment that fits the theme best, appearing on "El Dorado TV Spot" and "Superfun! TV Spot".
A trailer starring Osment, directed by the group with Liam Oz, is out alongside the tracklist. The album was dated for October 16 when it was first announced, and it is the largest electronic release of the month on the release calendar.
