The Black Crowes and Tedeschi Trucks Band joined forces for a three-song encore at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Monday night, closing out a show that paired their Southern Hospitality and Future Soul tours. Whiskey Myers opened the concert.
Tedeschi Trucks Band opened its own set with "Got My Mojo Workin'" and "Do I Look Worried," working through songs including "Who Am I," "Hero" and "I Want More" into "Willie The Pimp," before adding "What In The World," "Future Soul" and "Ohio." The set continued into a medley of Sly & The Family Stone covers, "You Can Make It If You Try" and "Everyday People," before an "Isaac & Kebbi" jam flowed into Dr. John's "I Walk On Guilded Splinters" and closed with Jeff Beck's "Beck's Bolero."
The Black Crowes followed with a set anchored by catalog staples including "Remedy," "Jealous Again," "My Morning Song," "Thorn In My Pride," "Hard To Handle," "Soul Singing," "She Talks To Angels" and "Twice As Hard."
For the encore, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi joined The Black Crowes for the Rolling Stones' "Loving Cup," a collaboration previewed weeks earlier at a Red Rocks show and featuring additional TTB members Mike Mattison, Mark Rivers, Alecia Chakour, Gabe Dixon, Isaac Eady, Elizabeth Lea, Emmanuel Echem and Kebbi Williams. With TTB drummer Tyler "Falcon" Greenwell added to the mix, the expanded lineup then played "Soul Shake," a song neither band had performed before, originally released by Peggy Scott and Jo Jo Benson in 1968 and based here on Delaney & Bonnie's 1969 version from their album To Bonnie From Delaney.
The night closed with a joint performance of "Space Captain," bringing members of both bands together onstage. The Black Crowes and Whiskey Myers continue the Southern Hospitality Tour this week, while Tedeschi Trucks Band's Future Soul Tour heads toward stops in Chicago this fall, with both acts' remaining rock dates tracked on the tour guide, including Tedeschi Trucks Band's own recent guest-heavy show in Berkeley.
