Underscores shares new video for "The Peace"

The clip pairs a smoggy soundstage with the breakup song's cigarette imagery.

Underscores, the artist also known as April Harper Grey, shared a music video for "The Peace" on August 12, an album cut from her record U. Directed by Ayodeji, the clip is set on a dramatically lit soundstage where Grey is swarmed by a thrashing crowd, and the set gradually fills with smoke as the song plays out, a visual nod to the cigarette-centric breakup story the song tells. Pitchfork and The FADER both covered the release the same day.

"The Peace" first arrived as a single in March, ahead of U, and has built into one of Grey's most viral songs. The FADER, which reviewed the track on its March release, described it as tracking a romance that unfolds over the course of three smokes and vape hits at different parties.

The pitch-black soundstage gives the clip a liminal, dreamlike quality despite its party setting, an effect The FADER credited to Ayodeji, who co-edited the video alongside Grey; Grey also served as its creative director.

Grey was The FADER's cover star in June and spoke further about the video and her rising profile in a sit-down interview with the outlet's editorial director, Steffanee Wang.

The video lands just ahead of a packed fall for the singer. She is set to open for Charli xcx's Music, Fashion, Film tour across North America starting in September, then head to Europe for her own run of headlining shows once that trek wraps. She is also on the bill for PC Music's Pop Crypt festival later this year.

For now, "The Peace" video gives fans a fuller picture of the album U, which remains logged on the release calendar among a busy year for pop releases, while Charli xcx's own Music, Fashion, Film tour builds toward the September opener Underscores will help kick off.
