Metro Boomin, Fred again.. and Travis Scott fill the GTA 6 soundtrack album

Atlantic Records and Rockstar Games have put a date and a shape on the music for the most anticipated game in years. Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album carries 34 original tracks, from Fred again.., Metro Boomin, Future and Morgan Wallen among others, and arrives on 19 November, the same day as the game itself, after several delays to both.

The first six singles are already out, and the one drawing the most attention is not quite what the headlines suggest. Travis Scott's RHYNO carries production from Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo of Daft Punk, which is a production credit rather than a Daft Punk appearance, and is the closest thing to new Daft Punk material anyone has had in some time.

Fred again..'s contribution is a track called Sexy Magic, and it is crowded: CA7RIEL and Paco Amoroso, PinkPantheress and Etienne de Crecy all appear on it. That is a dance producer, two Argentine artists having a very good year, a British pop singer and a French house veteran on one song for a video game.

The rest of the list reaches well outside electronic music. Yung Lean, Metro Boomin, Future, Rauw Alejandro, Morgan Wallen and Keith Richards all have original music on the record, which means the album spans Swedish cloud rap, Atlanta trap, reggaeton, country and a Rolling Stone inside 34 tracks.

There is an irony in the format. The album goes out digitally and physically, on CD and vinyl, with several special edition pressings already open for pre-order, while the game itself is download-only, which has irritated players used to buying Rockstar releases on disc. The soundtrack will sit on a shelf; the thing it soundtracks will not.

None of this is a departure for the series. The first gameplay reveal for GTA 6 closed with Bob Moses and Elderbrook's Inner Light, and we covered the streaming surge that followed, a jump of more than 1,000 per cent. GTA Online let players run a nightclub and deal with Solomun and The Blessed Madonna, and the in-game radio in earlier entries carried Green Velvet, Aphex Twin, Gesaffelstein, Flying Lotus, Robyn and the late Kavinsky.
